I think we have different understanding of "archiving".
In this case, by "auto archiving", we mean "it gets old and falls off the front page". There is no real explicit "archive" action that will cause something to disappear; all the content remains you just have to keep paging (or scrolling) through the timeline to get to it. Or search for it. Or one of several ways to find it.
"Manual Archiving" in this case is going to be like "hatting" a thread: you close it to new replies, drop in a summary as to why, and that's that.
